Extreme drought spreads into parts of Wake County, and Friday's rain likely won't do much to help

8%of North Carolina in extreme drought, up from 2% last week

That comes from the latest drought status report, released Thursday, Nov. 5.

Sources: WRAL, CBS 17

If you've been watching your lawn brown, the new numbers back you up. WRAL reports that parts of Wake County are now in extreme drought, and CBS 17 says the worsening includes eastern Wake County, southern Johnston County and much of Wayne County.

Rain and storms are in Friday's forecast, but they likely won't do much. CBS 17 says winter could bring a rainier pattern, though it can take time to set up.

  • Last measurable rain: Oct. 17, three-fourths of an inch
  • Expected this week: one-fourth of an inch to 1 inch
  • Needed to start recovery: over 12 inches
  • Climate Prediction Center outlook: drought persists through November

Durham County animal shelter says photos from a former employee don't show it today

A former employee's Facebook post about the Durham County animal shelter is stirring controversy. CBS 17 reports the photos show unsanitary conditions, moldy pet food and dead dogs piled into an incinerator. WRAL is not sharing the photos because they're graphic.

“What we want people in the community to know is these pictures don't represent what APS and the Durham shelter is today.”

Stacy Bluth, interim executive director, Animal Protection Society of Durham

The says the person left more than four months ago. WRAL captured video inside the shelter Thursday showing clean kennels and proper feeding and labeling.

State inspections and leadership changes frame the shelter's response

  1. Sept. 2025State inspection marked 'contingently/conditionally approved,' with nine areas needing improvement.
  2. March 2026The board of directors puts interim leadership in place.
  3. July 2026Inspection notes staff corrected earlier issues, but some still need repair.
  4. Nov. 7The shelter's Home for the Holidays fundraiser is scheduled at the Washington Duke Inn.

  • Tours: APS is hosting community tours in the coming weeks
  • Inspections, 2018 to January 2025: all marked 'approved'
  • Changes since March: staffing, training, accountability, transparency
